Note Basket

Size: 6 " L x 5" W x 2 1/4" H

MATERIAL LIST:

  • 5/8" F CUT 4 @ 12" EACH FOR WIDTH SPOKES
  • 5/8" F CUT 5 @ 14 " EACH FOR LENGTH SPOKES
  • 3/8" F 48" FOR THE 1ST  AND 3RD ROW WEAVERS
  • 1" F 51" FOR THE 2ND  ROW WEAVER AND FOR THE PEN TO REST ON
  • 5/8" FO 50" FOR INSIDE AND OUTSIDE RIM
  • 3/16" FO 60" FOR THE LASHING
  • #4 ROUND 21" TO GO BETWEEN THE INSIDE AND OUTSIDE RIM
  • 1/4" FO. 10" FOR THE PEN HOLDER

    1. ALWAYS SOAK THE REED IN WATER TILL YOU CAN FOLD WITH OUT THE REED SPLITTING.
    2. MARK THE CENTERS OF THE SPOKES ON THE WRONG SIDE (SIDE THAT WILL SEPARATE A LITTLE WHEN YOU BEND-RIGHT SIDE WILL BE SMOOTHER).
    3. LAY OUT WITH OVER/UNDER WEAVE WITH A 3/8 SPACE BETWEEN EACH SPOKE (USE A SCRAP PIECE OF REED TO USE AS A SPACER). SPRAY SPOKES WITH WATER TO KEEP WET. UPSET THE SPOKES TO START THE SIDES (BEND EACH SPOKE OVER BOTTOM OF BASKET). MAY WANT TO USE CLOTHES PENS IN THE CORNERS TO KEEP THE SPOKES IN PLACE.
    4. START WEAVING THE 1ST ROW WITH 3/8" F, STARTING BEHIND A SPOKE, MAKING SURE THAT THE SPOKE ON THE BOTTOM OF THE BASKET IS ON THE OPPOSITE SIDE. WHEN FINISHED WITH THE ROW HIDE THE WEAVER BEHIND THE BEGINNING POINT AND HIDING OVER 3RD  SPOKE. WEAVE 2ND ROW WITH THE 1"  F AND THE LAST ROW WITH THE 3/8" F. PACK DOWN ALL ROWS.
    5. BE SURE BASKET IS WET. CUT THE INSIDE SPOKES FLUSH WITH THE BASKET AND THE REST OF THE SPOKES SO THEY CAN BE HIDDEN BEHIND THE FIRST ROW (ABOUT 2 ") GOING TOWARD THE INSIDE OF THE BASKET. TUCK THE SPOKES BEHIND THE 1 ST ROW (USE A BUTTER KNIFE TO HOLD THE WEAVER OUT)
    6. CUT THE 5/8" FO TO FIT AROUND THE BASKET WITH ABOUT 2 IN EXCESS. DO THE SAME FOR THE INSIDE OF THE BASKET. TRIM AND SAND THE LAP OVER AREA AND CLIP TOGETHER BOTH THE INSIDE AND OUTSIDE OF THE BASKET. CUT THE ROUND REED TO FIT BETWEEN THE TWO. BE SURE ALL FITS TOGETHER WELL. TAKE THE END OF THE 3/16" FO AND HIDE BETWEEN THE INSIDE AND OUTSIDE RIM (I USUALLY GO UP AND DOWN ONCE OVER THE LAST ROW WOVEN) MAKING SURE THAT THE ROUNDED PART OF THE LASHING IS GOING TO BE UP WHEN GOING OVER THE RIM -GO BETWEEN EACH SPOKE PULLING TIGHT. END LASHING BY HIDING THE SAME WAY IT WAS STARTED.
    7. FOR THE PEN HOLDER, TAKE THE 1/4 FO, PULL IT THROUGH ABOUT HALFWAY IN FRONT OF THE CENTER SPOKE AND BEHIND THE BOTTOM WEAVER. MAKE AN X IN FRONT OF THE BASKET AND HIDE TOWARDS THE INSIDE OF THE BASKET BY TAKING THE ENDS BEHIND THE MIDDLE SPOKE (MAY HAVE TO TRIM FIRST).
    8. FOR THE PEN REST, TAKE THE 1" F, CUT ON ONE END TO MAKE IT ROUNDED. TURN BASKET UPSIDE DOWN TO FIGURE OUT HOW LONG THE PIECE NEEDS TO BE. LET THE ROUNDED EDGE STICK OUT ABOUT 11/4" AND THE OTHER END SHOULD GO ACROSS THE BOTTOM OF THE BASKET TO THE 3RD  SPOKE. USING A BUTTER KNIFE OR A WEAVER TOOL TO WORK IT THROUGH.
    9. FINISH BY SHAPING INTO A RECTANGLE OR LEAVE OVAL. SPRAY WITH WEAVERS STAIN.
    10. I USUALLY GIVE THIS AS A GIFT AND FILL WITH LITTLE NOTE PAPER THAT I MAKE ON THE COMPUTER. THIS IS A GREAT BASKET BY THE PHONE.

    ENJOY
